Affogato is Italian for “drowned,” and that’s exactly what this dessert is meant to be. A scoop of cold vanilla ice cream, slowly drowned in hot filter coffee decoction. The temperature contrast is what makes it special. The heat gently melts the outer layer of ice cream, while the cold centre stays intact. The coffee seeps into the cream, the cream softens the coffee, and you’re left with something that sits perfectly between a drink and a dessert.
It’s rich without being heavy, bittersweet without being sharp, and takes all of two minutes to make. The kind of thing that looks like effort, but really isn’t.
Perfect for when you want something indulgent but easy—like a Sunday morning treat.
Ingredients
- 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
- 60 ml hot filter coffee decoction (we recommend Meter Coffee’s Heritage Blend for a bold contrast)
Method
- Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a small bowl or heat-safe cup.
- Brew fresh filter coffee decoction, or gently reheat refrigerated decoction until hot but not boiling.
- Slowly pour the hot decoction over the ice cream.
- Serve immediately with a spoon while the textures are still layered.
Tips
- Full-fat ice cream works best for texture!
- Add a pinch of sea salt on top for a salted caramel effect.
- For extra indulgence, crumble a biscuit over the top.
Meter Coffee’s Heritage Blend holds its own against the sweetness of ice cream. The darker roast brings structure, the chicory adds body, and the heat of the decoction ties it all together. Nothing gets lost. Nothing overpowers.
